Workshop Diary : Day 1

DAY 1

Welcome & Icebreaker

After an initial icebreaker activity, (invaluable) that allowed the children (and leaders) to get to know each other, the children were introduced to the language of film.

All about films, film and filming

This involved showing and analysing with them, relevant and exciting examples of film, including movie trailers from the internet, pop videos and TV drama. We explained the importance of shots, camera angles, sound and effects. The children loved this session, to which they all contributed. Throughout the rest of the workshops - "STANDBY, ROLLING ACTION" and "CUT" could be heard being barked out all over the place.

Introduction to DV

Children were shown how to load the DV cameras with tape, how to record using the camcorders, set up tripods and attach microphones. Even the youngest soon managed the technical aspects and children helped each other.

Filming Practice

In order to give the children some real experience of filming we invited Sean, an expert breakdancer, to put on a performance for them to film.

Working in their groups the children filmed Sean's performance from different viewpoints and angles until they had lots of 'real footage' to edit on their computers.
